In recent years, awareness of neurodivergence (ADHD, autism, and learning disabilities) has grown significantly, particularly in children. Even though schools are adapting and offering more support services and therapies are expanding, support often dwindles as children get older, and by the time they are adults, there is hardly any support.
As a result, many neurodivergent adults face unique challenges, like managing emotions, finding and maintaining employment, and having healthy social relationships. Despite these difficulties, resources for adults are minimal compared to those available for children.
This lack of support can lead to feelings of isolation, unemployment, mental health struggles, and even substance abuse.
However, even though more support needs to be provided for neurodivergent adults, such as job training and career support, life skills coaching, mental health services, and more, there are still strategies you can use to help you be a successful adult, even if you may have some extra challenges.
Create Your Own Community
It is crucial to seek out and build connections with other neurodivergent adults. Online communities, local meetups, or support groups can be great for sharing experiences and offering advice and encouragement. There are many online groups specifically for neurodivergent people on platforms like Facebook, Discord, and Reddit.
Develop Self-Advocacy Skills
Learning to advocate for yourself in work, relationships, and life is essential. Researching your rights, such as workplace accommodations, is vital. Remember to ask for what you need clearly and confidently.
Find Available Resources
While resources specifically for adults are pretty limited, as I mentioned above, general programs, like career counseling and mental health services, can still help. Sometimes, nonprofits or organizations that support neurodivergent children or families - may still have programs or advice for adults.
Utilize Technology
Notion, Trello, and Google Calendar are all apps that can help with organization and time management. There are also apps that can help with mindfulness and improve attention.
Focus On Strengths
Although neurodivergence often brings many challenges, it can also bring many strengths, such as creativity, problem-solving, or thinking outside the box. Find ways to leverage your strengths in your personal or professional life.
Listen To Other People’s Experiences
Read books, listen to podcasts, and watch videos from other neurodivergent people who can share tips and insights into navigating adulthood. Hearing others’ experiences can offer new ideas for tackling challenges.
Set Realistic Goals & Celebrate Small Wins
Feeling discouraged when facing obstacles can be easy, but focusing on small and achievable goals can help build momentum. Celebrate progress no matter how small, and remind yourself that success looks different for everyone.
Practice Self-Compassion
While being neurodivergent comes with many extra challenges, which can be frustrating, remember to treat yourself with kindness and patience and that it’s okay to struggle.
While the lack of support for neurodivergent adults is a serious issue, by being resourceful and resilient, it is possible to create a life for yourself that is fulfilling and meaningful despite the many challenges.
